From millions at the start, only about a thousand sperm cells will reach the vicinity of the egg.As sperm cells approach the egg, they encounter multiple protective layers.The outermost layer, the corona radiata, consists of follicular cells that the sperm must navigate through.Multiple sperm cells attempt to penetrate these protective barriers simultaneously.When a sperm cell reaches the zona pellucida, it undergoes the acrosome reaction, releasing enzymes to break through this protective layer.Only one sperm successfully penetrates the zona pellucida and reaches the egg membrane.Once the sperm enters, the egg undergoes the cortical reaction, releasing enzymes that harden the zona pellucida to prevent other sperm from entering.With the sperm successfully inside, the egg is now ready for the final stage of fertilization.As the sperm nucleus enters the egg's cytoplasm, it begins to transform.The sperm nucleus decondenses and forms the male pronucleus, while the egg's chromosomes form the female pronucleus.The male and female pronuclei move toward each other and their nuclear membranes break down, allowing the chromosomes to mix.The 23 chromosomes from each parent align, forming 23 matched pairs for a total of 46 chromosomes.The cell now prepares for its first division. The mitotic spindle forms to separate the duplicated chromosomes.The cell undergoes cytokinesis, dividing into two identical daughter cells, each with a complete set of 46 chromosomes.The newly formed two-cell embryo begins its journey toward the uterus, where it will continue to develop.
