Neutrons, also in the nucleus, have no charge. Electrons are negatively charged and orbit the nucleus.Elements are pure substances made of one type of atom. Let's look at three common elements: hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen.Each element has a unique number of protons in its nucleus, called its atomic number. Hydrogen has one proton, carbon has six, and oxygen has eight.Scientists organize all known elements in the periodic table, arranged by their atomic number and chemical properties.Elements in the same column share similar properties. As we move from left to right, the atomic number increases by one.Understanding how elements are organized helps us predict their behavior and how they might interact with other elements.Chemical bonds form when atoms share or transfer electrons.In ionic bonding, one atom transfers an electron to another. Here, sodium gives its electron to chlorine.In covalent bonding, atoms share electrons. Let's see how two hydrogen atoms form molecular hydrogen.Chemical reactions involve breaking and forming bonds. A common example is the reaction between baking soda and vinegar.During chemical reactions, energy is either released in exothermic reactions, shown in red, or absorbed in endothermic reactions, shown in blue.Exothermic reactions release energy to the surroundings, while endothermic reactions absorb energy from the surroundings.
