The nervous system consists of two main divisions that work together to control all body functions.The Central Nervous System, or CNS, includes the brain and spinal cord. The brain serves as our command center, while the spinal cord acts as the main communication highway.The Peripheral Nervous System, or PNS, consists of nerves that branch throughout the entire body, connecting the CNS to every organ and tissue.At the microscopic level, neurons are the basic building blocks of the nervous system. These specialized cells form an intricate network for rapid information transmission.Each neuron has dendrites that receive signals, a cell body that processes information, and an axon that sends signals to other neurons.This complex network of neurons allows for rapid communication throughout the entire nervous system.Nerve signals begin with a resting membrane potential of negative seventy millivolts.When stimulated, sodium channels open, allowing sodium ions to rush into the cell.This creates an action potential - a rapid change in electrical charge that propagates along the neuron.After depolarization, potassium channels open, allowing potassium to flow out, restoring the negative charge.This electrical signal travels along the axon at speeds up to two hundred and sixty eight miles per hour.At the end of the axon, the electrical signal triggers the release of neurotransmitters.These chemical messengers bridge the gap to the next neuron, allowing the signal to continue its journey.The nervous system performs three main types of functions that work together seamlessly.First, sensory input collects information from our environment through our five senses: touch, sight, sound, taste, and smell.The brain then integrates this sensory information, processing and analyzing it to determine appropriate responses.Finally, motor neurons carry signals to muscles and glands, producing two types of responses.Voluntary responses are actions we consciously control, like walking, talking, writing, and playing sports.Involuntary responses happen automatically without conscious control, such as breathing, heartbeat, digestion, and reflexes.This three-part system allows our nervous system to constantly monitor our environment, process information, and respond appropriately to maintain our body's functions and interact with the world around us.
