This three-step process uses the energy and hydrogen carriers from the light reaction to fix carbon dioxide into organic compounds.In the first step, carbon dioxide is attached to a five-carbon compound. Then, using ATP and NADPH, the molecules are reduced to form simple sugars. Finally, the cycle regenerates the initial compounds to start again.Through these reactions, glucose is formed as the end product. This process doesn't require direct sunlight, which is why it's called the dark reaction.While the process uses the products of the light reaction, it can continue even when the sun isn't shining.
