The water cycle begins with evaporation, as the sun heats water in oceans, lakes, and rivers.As the sun's energy reaches the water surface, it transfers heat to the water molecules.As water molecules absorb heat energy, they begin to move faster and faster.When molecules gain enough energy, they break free from the liquid surface and become water vapor, rising into the air.Plants also contribute to this process through transpiration.Water vapor is released through tiny pores in their leaves called stomata.This combined process of evaporation and transpiration moves billions of gallons of water into the air each day.As water vapor rises higher in the atmosphere, it encounters progressively cooler temperatures.The water vapor molecules begin to slow down as they cool, losing their kinetic energy.In the cooler atmosphere, these water molecules encounter dust particles, which serve as condensation nuclei.The water molecules condense around these dust particles, forming tiny water droplets.As more droplets form and combine, they begin to create visible clouds.Through continued condensation, these clouds grow larger as more water droplets join together.As water droplets in clouds continue to grow through condensation, they eventually become too heavy to remain suspended in the air.Depending on the temperature, precipitation can take different forms.In warm conditions above freezing, water falls as rain.When temperatures drop below freezing, precipitation falls as snow.In storm clouds with strong updrafts, water droplets can freeze into hail.Once precipitation reaches the Earth's surface, it follows three main paths.Some water seeps into the ground, becoming groundwater.Some flows across the surface as runoff, eventually reaching streams, rivers, and oceans.And some collects on the surface in puddles, ponds, and lakes.
