The respiratory system is a complex network of organs and tissues that work together to enable breathing.Air enters through the nose and mouth, traveling down the trachea, also known as the windpipe.The trachea connects to our lungs, which are the main organs of respiration.Inside the lungs, the airways branch into smaller and smaller tubes, starting with the bronchi.These bronchi divide into even smaller airways called bronchioles.At the end of these branches are tiny air sacs called alveoli, where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange takes place.Let's take a closer look at these alveoli, the microscopic air sacs where gas exchange occurs.Beneath the lungs lies the diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle that is essential for breathing.The diaphragm is the main muscle of respiration, creating the pressure changes needed for breathing.During inhalation, two key muscle groups work together to expand the thoracic cavity.The diaphragm contracts and moves downward, while the intercostal muscles lift the rib cage up and out.This expansion creates negative pressure in the lungs, drawing air in like a vacuum.Air flows through the airways, traveling down towards the alveoli in the lungs.During exhalation, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward, while the rib cage returns to its resting position.This decreases the size of the thoracic cavity, creating positive pressure that pushes air out of the lungs.This process of inhalation and exhalation creates a continuous breathing cycle.At the alveolar-capillary interface, oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange occurs through diffusion.Oxygen molecules from the alveolus diffuse into the bloodstream through the thin walls.Red blood cells contain hemoglobin, a protein that can bind up to four oxygen molecules.As oxygen binds to hemoglobin, the red blood cells change color slightly, indicating they're now oxygen-rich.Meanwhile, carbon dioxide, a waste product from cellular metabolism, moves from the blood into the alveolus.This carbon dioxide will then be removed from the body through exhalation.This gas exchange process occurs continuously, roughly twelve to twenty times per minute in a healthy adult.
