Today we'll explore how rockets generate thrust using Newton's Third Law.Newton's Third Law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.When a rocket expels hot gases downward, it experiences an equal force pushing it upward.Let's look inside a rocket engine to understand how it generates thrust.Fuel and oxidizer are injected into the combustion chamber, where they mix and ignite.The hot, high-pressure gases are then expelled through the nozzle at extremely high speeds.To achieve liftoff, the rocket must generate enough thrust to overcome both its weight and Earth's gravitational pull.This initial phase of launch requires the most energy and fuel consumption.A rocket launch occurs in distinct stages, each optimized for different parts of the journey to space.The first stage is the largest and most powerful, designed to break through the densest part of the atmosphere. It requires maximum thrust to overcome both gravity and air resistance.As the first stage depletes its fuel, it separates from the rocket and falls away. This reduces the rocket's mass, making the next stage more efficient.The second stage continues the ascent where air resistance is much lower. The rocket now follows a curved trajectory, which is more efficient for reaching orbit.After the second stage completes its burn, it too separates, further reducing the rocket's mass.The final stage must achieve escape velocity - approximately 11.2 kilometers per second - to break free of Earth's gravitational pull.This staged approach dramatically improves efficiency. While the rocket starts at full mass, by the final stage it has shed about 96% of its initial mass.
