The Dutch cruiser De Ruyter, Admiral Doorman's flagship, was struck and sank with heavy casualties.The battle resulted in the loss of multiple Allied ships, including the cruisers De Ruyter, Java, and Exeter, along with several destroyers.This devastating defeat effectively ended Allied naval resistance in the Dutch East Indies, opening the way for the Japanese invasion of Java.On March 8, 1942, a historic meeting took place in Kalijati, Subang.Three key figures were present for this momentous occasion: Governor-General Tjarda van Starkenborgh Stachouwer, General Ter Poorten of the Dutch East Indies Army, and Lieutenant-General Imamura representing Japan.The Dutch officials were compelled to sign an unconditional surrender document, formally ending Dutch control over the East Indies.With each signature, three and a half centuries of Dutch colonial rule came to an end.This marked the end of 350 years of Dutch colonial presence in Indonesia, which had begun with the establishment of the Dutch East India Company in 1602.With the signing of this document, control over the entire Dutch East Indies territory transferred to Japanese authority.Japan now had official control over the former Dutch East Indies.After taking control, Japan established a military administration system across Indonesia.They divided Indonesia into three administrative regions, each under different military commands.Sumatra was controlled by the 25th Army headquartered in Bukittinggi.Java and Madura were under the 16th Army based in Jakarta.The eastern regions were administered by the Japanese Navy from Makassar.To gain support from the Indonesian people, Japan launched a propaganda campaign.They promoted the slogan 'Asia for Asia', suggesting Asian nations should be free from Western colonialism.Japan also promised Indonesia future independence to secure local cooperation.
