Let's explore the three main phases of swallowing.The process begins in the mouth, where we have conscious control over our actions.During the oral phase, food enters the mouth and is manipulated by the tongue and teeth.Through chewing and saliva, the food is formed into a bolus - a rounded mass that's easy to swallow.As the tongue pushes the bolus to the back of the mouth, we transition to the pharyngeal phase.At this point, the swallowing reflex takes over, and the process becomes involuntary.This marks the beginning of the esophageal phase, where the food will continue its journey downward.The entire swallowing process, from start to finish, typically takes between eight and ten seconds.Now that we understand the three phases, let's look closer at how the muscles work together during this process.The process of peristalsis involves coordinated muscle contractions in the esophagus.Two main muscle layers work together: circular muscles that wrap around the esophagus, and longitudinal muscles that run along its length.As food moves down the esophagus, circular muscles contract behind it while relaxing ahead of it.This process is controlled by the autonomous nervous system, which coordinates the muscle contractions automatically.The esophagus is made up of smooth muscle tissue, which can maintain sustained contractions and operate without conscious control.As the food bolus enters the esophagus, it begins its journey to the stomach.The Lower Esophageal Sphincter, or LES, is a crucial muscle that acts as a gateway between the esophagus and stomach.The LES remains tightly closed most of the time, preventing stomach contents from flowing backward into the esophagus.As the food bolus approaches, the LES begins to relax, allowing the food to pass through.Once the food has passed, the LES quickly contracts again, creating a tight seal to prevent reflux of stomach contents.Interestingly, this process works even against gravity. The coordinated muscle contractions are so effective that we can swallow while upside down.The entire journey from the top of the esophagus to the stomach typically takes between eight and ten seconds.
