The unconditioned stimulus and response are natural pairs, while the neutral stimulus initially has no effect on behavior.This natural reflex - food triggering salivation - is the baseline behavior that Pavlov would use to demonstrate how new associations could be learned.Food is presented, reinforcing the association.As conditioning occurs, the neural pathway between stimulus and response becomes stronger.Classical conditioning appears in many everyday situations. Let's look at how a visit to the dentist can create learned responses.Initially neutral sounds like the dental drill become associated with discomfort, leading to anxiety even before treatment begins.Advertisers use classical conditioning by pairing their jingles or logos with pleasant experiences.After repeated exposure, just hearing the jingle can trigger cravings for the advertised product.However, when a conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus, extinction occurs.The strength of the conditioned response gradually decreases over time, as shown in this graph.We can see how the response weakens from its initial strength to near extinction as trials continue without reinforcement.
