In the lungs, this causes congestion and difficulty breathing.Fluid also accumulates in the legs and abdomen, causing swelling known as edema.These changes create several significant problems for patients.Many patients experience difficulty breathing when lying flat, known as orthopnea, due to fluid in their lungs.Swelling in the extremities can become severe and uncomfortable.Unfortunately, these compensatory mechanisms, while initially helpful, ultimately contribute to worsening heart function.This creates a cycle where the body's attempts to help actually make the condition worse over time.Understanding these effects helps us better manage heart failure and improve patients' quality of life.
