If we enlarged the nucleus to the size of a pea, the electron shell would extend to the size of a football field!Now that we understand the basic structure of atoms, we're ready to explore how different numbers of these particles create different elements.The atomic number of an element is determined by the number of protons in its nucleus.Let's start with hydrogen, the simplest element. It has one proton and one electron.When we add another proton, we create a completely different element: helium, with atomic number 2.Adding a third proton creates lithium, showing how each proton addition creates a new element.The periodic table organizes elements by their atomic number, which increases as we add protons.In a neutral atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons, maintaining an overall neutral charge.This equal number of positive protons and negative electrons results in a neutral atom with no overall charge.Now that we understand how protons determine the element type, let's explore how neutrons and electrons can vary while maintaining the element's identity.Atoms of the same element can have different numbers of neutrons while keeping the same number of protons.These variants are called isotopes. Here we see three isotopes of carbon.Notice how each carbon isotope has 6 protons, but the number of neutrons increases from 6 to 7 to 8.Now let's see how atoms can become ions. Here's a neutral sodium atom.When sodium loses an electron from its outer shell, it becomes a positively charged sodium ion.On the other hand, here's a neutral chlorine atom.When chlorine gains an electron, it becomes a negatively charged chloride ion.Remember, when an atom has more protons than electrons, it becomes a positive ion. When it has more electrons than protons, it becomes a negative ion.
