In liquids, they flow freely but stay close together. In gases, particles move rapidly and spread apart.At room temperature, different elements naturally exist in different states.Mercury is one of the few elements that is liquid at room temperature, while helium remains a gas, and iron is solid.Elements can also exist in different forms called allotropes. Carbon provides an excellent example of this.In diamond, carbon atoms form a rigid three-dimensional crystal structure, while in graphite, they form layers of hexagonal sheets.These different arrangements of the same element result in vastly different properties - diamond is extremely hard, while graphite is soft and slippery.Elements are fundamental to the human body.
