Plants have evolved an amazing process to capture and use the sun's energy.Sunlight is absorbed by the leaves, where special green pigments called chlorophyll capture light energy.While the leaves capture sunlight, the roots actively draw water from the soil.Inside the leaf cells, specialized structures called chloroplasts contain all the necessary components for photosynthesis.This first stage of photosynthesis establishes the two essential ingredients: light energy and water.Carbon dioxide enters the leaf through tiny pores called stomata.As carbon dioxide molecules move through the stomata, they enter the leaf's internal structure.Inside specialized structures called chloroplasts, the real work of photosynthesis takes place.Using captured light energy, water molecules are split into hydrogen and oxygen.The hydrogen then combines with carbon dioxide in a complex process called the Calvin Cycle.Through multiple steps, carbon dioxide is converted into simple sugars.As this process continues, oxygen is released as a waste product, exiting through the same stomata.The final product of photosynthesis is glucose, a simple sugar molecule with the formula C6H12O6.This glucose can be used immediately by the plant for energy to power various cellular processes.Alternatively, glucose can be converted into starch for long-term storage in different parts of the plant.Plants store this energy in various locations: leaves, stems, roots, and fruits.During the day, plants produce glucose through photosynthesis. At night, they use their stored energy to survive.This stored energy doesn't just benefit the plant. It forms the foundation of Earth's food chain.When herbivores eat plants, they access this stored energy.This energy then flows to carnivores, making plant glucose production essential for all life on Earth.
