Research Paper Writing: What Students Should Know
Starting a research paper can definitely feel stressful and overwhelming.
Most students report that simply figuring out how to even begin is the most difficult part of the entire process.
However, the good news is that by systematically breaking down the project into clear steps and components, what seemed like an insurmountable task can become much more manageable.
- You have to understand the basics
First things first. It is absolutely crucial to have a crystal clear understanding of what the instructor is asking for with the assignment. And precisely what the expectations are.
Take time to thoroughly read the instructions and guidelines. Also, ensure you take note of the required length, citation format (MLA and APA are typically the most common), and any special sources that should be referenced.
You should also understand the overall purpose and goals of the paper.
Sometimes meeting with the professor to clarify anything that seems ambiguous can clear away a lot of initial confusion and uncertainty.
- Pick a really good research topic
Next, you'll want to invest ample time in carefully selecting an appropriate topic to research and analyze. The topic forms the foundation that your entire project will be built upon, so choose wisely!
It should align with your academic coursework. It should be something that sparks your curiosity. A topic with substantive research and evidence gathering.
Instead of just going with the first idea that pops into your head, consider jotting down 4 or 5 potential topics and fleshing out the merits of each one.
StudyFetch has some really handy AI-powered tools that you can tap into during this brainstorming phase. It can suggest promising topics based on current, relevant academic trends.
The suggestions are pulled from credible sources like Google, so you know you'll be working with meaningful material.
- You'll need a solid thesis statement
As your preliminary investigation and reading on your chosen research topic starts to reveal interesting patterns and insights, you'll want to hone in on crafting a clear, focused thesis statement.
This single sentence essentially announces what conclusion you have drawn about the topic based on an initial survey of the evidence available.
StudyFetch also has an awesome feature where you can input your thesis draft to instantly receive relevant published studies and statistics that substantiate the claims you are making.
Super helpful for making sure you are backing up your core argument with credible proof right from the start.
- Create a good research paper outline
Okay, so once you know the basic premise of your paper via the finely-tuned thesis statement, it's time to systematically map out the flow of your research and analysis through an outline.
This bird's eye view of your project allows you to logically structure how you will support your main argument by dividing your paper up into sections.
Introduction
Typically, research papers consist of an introduction where the topic and thesis are presented. It also includes several body paragraphs that each develop a main point connected back to the central thesis. This is supported by evidence from your research.
Finally, a conclusion that summarizes the overall learnings and importance of the work.
The outline serves as your blueprint. It's what you'll use to systematically build up each critical piece of the puzzle. This is what defends and explains your unique perspective on the research topic.
Writing and citations
Now, we get into the actual writing. As you write out paragraphs fleshing out the various aspects of your thesis, it is imperative that you properly cite any sources you reference or incorporate ideas and quotes from.
Failing to do so constitutes plagiarism, which must be avoided at all costs in academic writing.
Depending on what citation format your instructor requested, you'll need to master how to seamlessly integrate in-text citations. Yes, along with a bibliography or references list at the tail end of your paper, attributing credit to other researchers and authors whose work informed your own.
If you ever have any uncertainty about how to correctly cite a resource used, StudyFetch has amazing citation generation tools that do all the heavy lifting for you. It takes the source of the information and instantly formats it correctly, so all you have to do is plug it into your paper.
Proofreading and editing your final draft
Once you have completed a thorough first draft encompassing all the points in your outline, take a breather and then come back to review and revise with fresh eyes.
Read slowly and carefully. Keep an eye out for any grammar slip-ups, awkward phrasing, spelling mishaps, holes in logic, and insufficient transitions between ideas.
It can also be invaluable to have a peer read over your draft for a second opinion on areas that could be improved before turning it in.
