Writing a dissertation takes a great deal of work. If you've never written one before, it could be even more tricky. You'd be staring at your paper or laptop asking yourself questions.

Where do I start? How do I gather or go about my research? These are the kind of questions a lot of students ask.

Now, to write a quality dissertation, you'll have to plan really well and a lot of hard work in terms of research and writing. Plus, you've got to have great attention to details and patience.

I know it's a lot of work, but don't sweat it. I'll walk you through writing a very good dissertation in seven practical steps.

But before we dive into all of that, what exactly is a dissertation?

What Is a Dissertation?

A dissertation is an extensive research project you're expected to carry out during your final year. This is required by a lot of programs in Europe.

It's an academic writing that usually accounts for a big percent of your final grade.

Basically, as a student it gives you the chance to research on a topic you're interested in and relates to your major. And of course, you're guided by a supervisor.

I think a good question would be, what's the goal? It's simple, the institution wants you to make an original contribution to your field of study. You'd be doing this by conducting robust research on a topic that interests you.

7 Steps to Write a Dissertation

1. Choose a Relevant and Manageable Topic

Selecting a topic for your dissertation is really important. You want to pick something that will interest you continually and that you truly care about.

To limit possibilities and gain their opinion on viability, run ideas by your supervisor. You may want to consider feasibility as well. Make sure the scope is in line with the duration and depth of the resources available and the goals of your program.

Establish clear research questions and parameters up front to keep your topic reasonable. For instance, instead of looking at the effects of budget cuts on music education generally, you may look at how they affect middle school music programs in a particular county.

This deliberate focus prepares you for a thorough analysis.

2. Develop a Clear Research Proposal

This is going to be a long research, which means it needs good preparation. A good start to this preparation would be creating a research proposal.

The proposal is essentially an overview of what you plan to investigate and how and why. It should provide context on existing research pertaining to your area of study, highlight gaps, and clearly describe what original insights your project will contribute.

Key components include:

• A concise but descriptive title
• Research problems and questions
• Aims and objectives
• The rationale importance of the study
• Concise, focused literature review
• Proposed research methodology and methods
• Outline of dissertation structure

Your proposal needs to present a convincing, realistic plan that responds directly to the brief. It should demonstrate your preparation, forethought, and academic rigour.

Submitting a thoughtful proposal gets supervisors, and committee members excited about your research potential and sets you up for approval so you can confidently progress.

3. Conduct a Thorough Literature Review

A thorough review of the body of academic literature already published on your particular research subject is crucial before producing any original data or analysis on the topic of your dissertation.

This evaluation should highlight the gaps your project seeks to fill by summarising, synthesising, and critiquing the state of research.

A few key pointers: Use library databases to systematically search for highly relevant academic journal articles, papers and books. Assess credibility and scout for frequently cited landmark studies.

Absorb a sense of breadth of research approaches, theories, methodologies, debates, and conclusions that other scholars have applied. Look for patterns - are there conflicting viewpoints or consistent findings? Note gaps that present open research questions.

Take detailed notes and keep scrupulous records of source details for later citation. Start writing early, organizing the previous literature review by common themes, issues, theories or methodologies. Provide context on how theories have evolved over time.

4. Plan Your Research Methodology

With your literature review complete, the next task is to detail precisely how you'll conduct your own robust research process to answer the specific questions and meet the goals described in your proposal.

Consider what blend of research approaches makes the most sense for your study. Quantitative methodology centres numerical data to probe relationships between measurable variables through surveys, experiments, analytics, polls and more.

Qualitative methods explore personal experiences, behaviours, emotions and opinions using techniques like interviews, focus groups, participant observation, discourse analysis and archival research.

When necessary, mixed methods integrate quantitative and qualitative approaches to support findings.

Describe the best approach to collect the necessary data. Specify any required ethical safeguards - like guaranteeing anonymity or gaining informed consent from human participants.

Define analysis processes, considering statistical testing for quantitative data or thematic/discourse analysis methodologies for qualitative information. Directly relate methods to the goals and research questions.

Build out detailed timelines for each research activity through completion.

5. Create a Comprehensive Dissertation Outline

Every good dissertation needs a great outline. The outline plays the role of the roadmap to how you’re going to organize each piece.

This is what your outline should look like:

1. Introduction
2. Literature review
3. Methodology
4. Results
5. Decision
6. Conclusion
7. Introduction
8. References

6. Write and Revise Each Section Carefully

With an orderly outline as your trusted blueprint comes the satisfying step of bringing your ambitious goal to life through writing. As the meat of work is ahead, pace yourself.

To attain flow state immersion, block off writing sessions and reduce outside distractions.

Block off writing sessions, minimizing distractions to achieve flow state immersion. Adjust goals as needed: 500 polished words a session? Three sources synthesized?

Start with the section that inspires you most. The introduction and literature review comprises preliminary muscle flexes, so they may flow faster, building your academic writing muscles incrementally before diving into newer terrain.

But some propose launching straight into the seemingly toughest chunk if you're feeling bold!

7. Edit, Proofread and Format Your Dissertation

As finishing touches, exhaustive self-editing and proofreading are musts! Give your academic  masterpiece the polish it deserves by eliminating distracting surface-level errors that could undermine the credibility of your work.

I'd strongly recommend you read passages aloud or backwards word-for-word to catch tricky typos. You can ask a friend to read the piece for a fresh perspective. Tighten phrasing and varying sentence structure for better flow.

Verify that the formatting for footnotes, endnotes, bibliographies, and links between text and graphics follows style guides. Submit sample excerpts to online proofreading services.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the point of a dissertation?

After reading up to the point, you might have said to yourself, what's the point of all of this? Well, the point is to help you develop solid research skills as a final-year student. Plus, don't forget I mentioned earlier that this takes a great chuck of your grade.

How long should it take to write a dissertation?

So, how long it takes to write a good dissertation is a question I come across too often. The answer depends on whether you're studying full-time or part-time. It also comes down to if this is an undergraduate or PhD dissertation. During the final year of your undergraduate, you might have to spend at least 3-4 months writing a research dissertation on a topic. For PhD applicants, this could stretch up to nine months.

Can a dissertation be written in a week?

Do you want an answer right off the bat? It's a solid NO. There are a lot of boxes you have to check when writing an academic dissertation. It's simply not possible to pull it off one week. Well, except, of course, you want to plagiarize someone else's work.

Conclusion

It's been a long piece already, so I'd try to wrap this up in a few lines. I didn't want to rush over things here, so I took the pain to cover everything as much as I could.

So, with everything that's been spelt out so far, it's obvious writing a dissertation takes a great deal of work.

Another thing we've pointed out is that you can have a really good academic paper if you follow the seven steps I've laid out.

This isn't the kind of paper you try to rush through; it needs patience, so get rid of the idea you'll be done in two weeks.
