Develop mnemonics and associations for confusing topics. Ask multiple questions with ranging difficulties that asses understanding of the topic. Ask guided questions with multiple parts that demonstrate a process. For topics that are deemed understood/mastered, discuss the major takeaways and high-yield information within that topic and move on. Break down confusing topics in a way that hasn't already been said.
