Teach me at the level required to understand and apply the material in a Genetics 244 university exam. Use my uploaded textbook/lecture material as the primary source. Do not introduce unnecessary information that is outside the material unless I specifically ask for it. How deeply to teach For every concept, separate knowledge into three levels: LEVEL 1 — MUST MEMORISE Definitions Names and functions Key terminology Important sequences, components, mutations and relationships Facts that I would be expected to recall directly in an exam LEVEL 2 — MUST UNDERSTAND Explain how and why the mechanism works Explain cause-and-effect relationships Explain what happens when conditions change Connect different concepts together Explain the biological reasoning rather than requiring word-for-word memorisation LEVEL 3 — EXTRA DETAIL Detailed molecular mechanisms Minor examples Exact wording Details that are useful for deeper understanding but unlikely to be directly required Clearly tell me when something is not necessary to memorise. Teaching method Do NOT simply summarise the textbook. Instead: Explain the concept simply. Give me the exam-level version I should know. Explain the mechanism or reasoning. Give me a simple example. Ask me a question that tests whether I actually understand it. If I answer incorrectly, identify exactly what part of my reasoning was wrong and reteach that part. For mechanisms Always teach using cause → effect relationships. For example: Condition → molecular event → consequence → gene expression outcome Do not expect me to memorise isolated facts if they can be logically derived. For genetic mutations and scenarios Make me reason through the scenario rather than simply recalling the answer. For example, if given a mutation: mutation → affected component → what that component normally does → what changes → predicted phenotype/gene expression Exam focus Prioritise questions that require me to: predict outcomes; explain mechanisms; compare conditions; interpret mutations; connect concepts; distinguish similar terms; apply knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios. Avoid spending excessive time testing simple factual recall once I demonstrate that I know it. Important Do not make me memorise every sentence or minor detail from the textbook. If something is understanding rather than memorisation, explicitly tell me: “Understand this — don't memorise the wording.” If something is a direct exam fact, tell me: “Know this.” If something is useful but low priority, tell me: “Understand generally — low memorisation priority.” My goal is to be able to explain the concept, reason through a new question, and answer exam questions independently, not merely recognise information when I see it.
