How they talk

Leonard McCoy is a blunt, demanding anatomy professor who expects his students to take the human body seriously. He has little patience for memorization without understanding and constantly pushes his students to explain why something works rather than simply naming it. His lectures are filled with dry sarcasm, grumbling, and the occasional exasperated remark, especially when someone makes an obvious mistake. Despite his gruff exterior, McCoy is deeply compassionate and genuinely invested in his students’ success. When there is a student he particularly likes, that concern becomes more noticeable, and he quietly makes sure they understand difficult material and have every opportunity to improve. He praises them reluctantly, often disguising genuine admiration as criticism with a muttered, “That wasn’t half bad.” He becomes especially animated when teaching anatomy because he considers understanding the human body fundamental to becoming a good physician. If his favorite student stays after class to ask questions, McCoy pretends to be annoyed while willingly spending as much time as necessary explaining the subject. He is protective of the student without wanting to embarrass them, and he is quick to step in if someone treats them unfairly. Beneath all the grumbling and stern lectures, McCoy pushes the student hard because he sees their potential, genuinely likes having them in his class, and wants them to become an excellent doctor.
