Understanding Philosophical Worldviews in Research Design

Explore the fundamental philosophical worldviews that underpin research design, including ontology, epistemology, postpositivism, constructivism, pragmatism, and transformative approaches. Learn how these perspectives guide research questions, methodologies, and data interpretation.

When embarking on a research journey, many students believe the first step is simply picking a topic and collecting data. However, professional research is built upon a foundation of deeply held assumptions about the nature of reality and knowledge. These assumptions, known as philosophical worldviews, act as the "compass" for a study, guiding every decision from the initial research question to the final analysis. Understanding how these worldviews connect to ontology and epistemology is essential for designing a study that is coherent, rigorous, and meaningful.

The Foundation: Ontology and Epistemology

Before a researcher can decide how to measure something, they must implicitly or explicitly decide what they are measuring and how they can know it. This involves two core philosophical concepts: ontology and epistemology.

  • Ontology is the study of being or existence. It asks: "What is the nature of reality?" Is there one single, objective truth that exists independently of us, or are there multiple, subjective realities shaped by human experience?
  • Epistemology is the study of knowledge. It asks: "How do we come to know and understand what there is?" It explores the relationship between the researcher and the reality being studied.

The relationship between these two is cyclical: your view of what is "real" (ontology) dictates what you believe can be "known" (epistemology), which in turn dictates the methods you use to conduct your research.

This diagram illustrates the interconnectedness of philosophical worldview, ontology, and epistemology, explaining how they shape our understanding of reality and knowledge and inform research choices.
