Psychology is often misunderstood as a collection of subjective opinions or "common sense" observations. However, to be a true science, psychology must move beyond intuition and rely on a structured, rigorous framework for understanding human behavior and mental processes. This framework is known as the scientific method. By utilizing this method, psychologists can transform vague observations into reliable knowledge, allowing them to explain why we act, think, and feel the way we do.
The Framework of Discovery: The Scientific Method
The scientific method is a systematic way of learning about the world through three primary stages: collecting observations, developing theories to explain those observations, and using those theories to make predictions about future events.
At the heart of this process is the hypothesis. A hypothesis is a testable prediction regarding processes that can be observed and measured. For a hypothesis to be scientifically useful, it must meet two critical criteria:
- Precision: It must be stated in precise and relevant terms.
- Falsifiability: It must be possible to prove the hypothesis wrong.
Exam Tip: Falsifiability A statement like "All swans are white" is a scientific hypothesis because finding a single black swan proves it wrong. A statement that cannot be proven wrong by any possible observation is not a scientific hypothesis.
Once researchers have tested multiple hypotheses and integrated numerous findings into a coherent whole, they develop a theory. A theory is not just a "hunch" or an opinion; it is a broad explanation that generates new hypotheses and organizes existing knowledge. Unlike personal beliefs, scientific theories are not equally plausible, and their validity is not determined by how many people believe in them. Furthermore, theories are dynamic—they are constantly updated as new information becomes available.
