What is psychology? While many people associate the term with "common sense" or personality quizzes found in magazines, the field is actually a rigorous, multifaceted discipline. Psychological science is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It seeks to understand everything from the biological underpinnings of the brain to the complex social interactions that shape our cultures.
To truly understand human nature, psychologists must look through various "lenses," such as the biological-neuroscience perspective, the cognitive perspective, and the evolutionary perspective. However, being a scientist requires more than just studying these perspectives; it requires a specific way of processing information to ensure that what we believe is actually true.
The Foundation: Empirical Evidence vs. Popular Psychology
The primary distinction between a scientist and a casual observer lies in how they gather information. Psychological science relies on empirical evidence, which is information based on astute observation and accurate measurement. Instead of relying on intuition or anecdotes, scientists use systematic research to establish facts.
This stands in stark contrast to popular psychology (or "pop psychology"). Pop psychology refers to claims about psychological phenomena that are promoted through social media, magazines, and television. While these claims are often widely accepted by the public, they frequently lack scientific validity.
Exam Tip: Remember that psychology is often not common sense. Scientific evidence frequently contradicts our initial intuitions.
Distinguishing Science from Pseudoscience
One of the most dangerous aspects of misinformation is pseudoscience—a collection of beliefs or practices that are mistakenly thought to be based on valid science. Because pseudoscience often uses scientific-sounding language, it can be difficult to spot without careful scrutiny.
