Integration is often described as an art form because, unlike differentiation, there is no single "master formula" that works for every function. While basic integration rules handle simple polynomials and trigonometric functions, more complex expressions require specialized strategies. To move beyond the basics, you must master two fundamental techniques: u-substitution, which reverses the Chain Rule, and Integration by Parts, which reverses the Product Rule.

U-Substitution: The Reverse Chain Rule

When you differentiate a composite function, such as $f(g(x))$, you apply the Chain Rule: ddx[f(g(x))]=f′(g(x))⋅g′(x)\frac{d}{dx}[f(g(x))] = f'(g(x)) \cdot g'(x)

Integration by substitution (or uu-substitution) is the process of working backward from this result. It is used when an integrand contains both a function and its derivative (or a constant multiple of its derivative).

The Step-by-Step Process

To perform a uu-substitution, follow these logical steps:

  1. Identify the "inner" function: Look for a part of the integrand, g(x)g(x), whose derivative $g'(x)$ is also present in the expression. Let u=g(x)u = g(x).
  2. Calculate the differential: Find dudu by differentiating uu with respect to xx. This is written as $du = g'(x) , dx$.
  3. Substitute: Replace all instances of g(x)g(x) with uu and $g'(x) , dx$ with dudu. The goal is to transform a complex integral into a simpler one in terms of uu.
  4. Integrate: Solve the new, simpler integral.
  5. Back-substitute: Replace uu with the original g(x)g(x) to get the final answer in terms of xx.

Worked Example: U-Substitution

Evaluate the following integral: ∫2xex2 dx\int 2x e^{x^2} \, dx

Step 1: We notice that x2x^2 is an "inner" function, and its derivative is $2x$, which is conveniently sitting right there in the integrand. Let: u=x2u = x^2
