At its most fundamental level, life is a constant struggle against disorder. To maintain the complex structures that define an organism, cells must continuously transform matter and energy. This continuous process of transformation is known as metabolism. Metabolism is not a single event but the totality of an organism's chemical reactions, all of which are subject to the laws of physics. Through these reactions, organisms can rearrange matter, build essential components like proteins, and harness energy to sustain life.

The Architecture of Metabolism: Pathways and Enzymes

Metabolism does not occur in a single, chaotic burst of activity. Instead, it is organized into metabolic pathways. A metabolic pathway is a series of many individual biochemical reactions, where the product of one reaction becomes the reactant for the next.

Because these reactions must happen at speeds compatible with life, they are facilitated by enzymes. Enzymes are catalytic proteins that speed up specific chemical reactions by lowering the activation energy (EAE_A)—the initial energy "hurdle" required to reach a transition state and break or form bonds. Crucially, while enzymes make reactions happen faster, they do not change the overall free energy change (ΔG\Delta G) of the reaction.

Exam Tip: Remember that enzymes are highly specific. The 3D shape of the enzyme must match the 3D shape of the substrate to form an enzyme-substrate complex.

Energy Transformations: Catabolism vs. Anabolism

To maintain a stable energy balance, cells utilize two distinct types of metabolic pathways: catabolic and anabolic. These pathways are categorized by how they handle energy and molecular complexity.
