The Social Contract represents Hobbes' solution to escape the dangerous state of nature. In the state of nature, Hobbes described life as 'solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.' Individuals exist in constant conflict and fear.Hobbes proposes that rational individuals would agree to surrender some of their natural freedoms to escape this dangerous state. This mutual agreement is what Hobbes calls the 'social contract.' Under this contract, people transfer their rights to a sovereign power.Unlike later social contract theorists, Hobbes doesn't suggest this happened as a historical event but presents it as a logical justification for political authority. This transfer of rights to the sovereign is nearly absolute in Hobbes' view.Hobbes believed divided sovereignty would lead back to conflict and chaos. In exchange for surrendering freedoms, individuals receive protection and peace from the sovereign. The social contract transforms society from a dangerous state of chaos into an ordered system under sovereign protection.
