Welcome to understanding ECG basics and lead placement with Spark.E!An ECG, or electrocardiogram, records the electrical activity of the heart using electrodes placed on specific locations of the body.There are six precordial leads, labeled V1 through V6, placed directly on the chest wall.The six limb leads - I, II, III, aVR, aVL, and aVF - are placed on the arms and legs to record the heart's electrical activity in the frontal plane.ECG recordings are made on specialized graph paper with a standardized grid pattern.Each small square represents zero point zero four seconds horizontally and zero point one millivolts vertically.A normal ECG waveform consists of several distinct components that represent different phases of the heart's electrical activity.The P wave represents atrial depolarization, when the electrical signal starts in the upper chambers of the heart.The QRS complex shows ventricular depolarization, as the electrical signal spreads through the main pumping chambers.Finally, the T wave indicates ventricular repolarization, when the ventricles recover and prepare for the next heartbeat.The PR interval, measured from the start of the P wave to the beginning of the QRS complex, normally takes between point twelve and point twenty seconds.The QRS complex duration should be less than point twelve seconds in a healthy heart.The QT interval represents the total time for ventricular depolarization and repolarization.In a normal heart rhythm, the spacing between QRS complexes is regular, with a heart rate between sixty and one hundred beats per minute.The baseline between complexes should be straight and free from interference, with regular spacing between beats.Let's examine common ECG abnormalities, starting with atrial fibrillation.In atrial fibrillation, we see irregular RR intervals and missing P waves, indicating chaotic atrial activity.ST elevation myocardial infarction, or STEMI, shows characteristic elevation of the ST segment.Bundle branch blocks are identified by widened QRS complexes, indicating delayed ventricular activation.Abnormal heart rates can also indicate various conditions.
