Welcome to our exploration of the nervous system's structure and organization! The nervous system is divided into two main parts that work together to control all bodily functions. These two parts are the Central Nervous System, or CNS, and the Peripheral Nervous System, or PNS.The Central Nervous System consists of the brain, our command center, and the spinal cord, which carries signals throughout the body. The Peripheral Nervous System includes all the nerves that branch out from the spinal cord, reaching every part of our body.At the microscopic level, the basic building blocks of the nervous system are neurons, specialized cells that transmit information throughout the body. Each neuron has dendrites that receive signals, a cell body that processes information, and an axon that sends signals to other neurons. When a neuron receives a stimulus, it generates an electrical signal called an action potential. This electrical impulse travels along the axon in milliseconds. At the synapse, the electrical signal triggers the release of chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. These neurotransmitters are stored in small vesicles, ready to be released when signaled. The neurotransmitters cross the synaptic cleft and bind to specific receptor proteins on the receiving neuron. When enough receptors are activated, they trigger a new electrical signal in the receiving neuron, continuing the transmission process. The nervous system controls two types of responses: voluntary and involuntary actions.Voluntary actions, like reaching for a cup, require conscious thought and controlled muscle movements. In contrast, involuntary responses like your heartbeat are controlled automatically by the autonomic nervous system. The nervous system processes information from all five senses, allowing us to perceive and interact with our environment. It also maintains homeostasis, regulating vital functions like body temperature.Reflexes are rapid, automatic responses that protect us from harm. They follow a specific pathway from stimulus to response.
