Welcome to our exploration of cell division, starting with Interphase!Interphase is the longest phase of the cell cycle, taking up approximately 90% of the entire process. The cell cycle begins with G1 phase, where the cell grows and produces new proteins.During S phase, the cell replicates its DNA, creating exact copies of each chromosome. Finally, in G2 phase, the cell continues to grow and prepares for the upcoming division.Let's examine each phase in more detail. During G1, the cell grows and produces proteins while duplicating its organelles. In S phase, the cell carefully replicates its entire genome while synthesizing new histones and duplicating its centrosomes.G2 phase involves final growth and protein checking to ensure the cell is ready for division.Throughout interphase, the cell uses checkpoints to ensure proper progression through each phase.During prophase, the first phase of mitosis, several key events occur simultaneously. The chromatin begins to condense, transforming from loose strands into compact chromosomes. Each chromosome consists of two identical sister chromatids joined at the centromere. The nuclear envelope starts to break down, and the centrosomes move to opposite poles of the cell.In metaphase, the chromosomes align along the cell's equator, forming what's called the metaphase plate. The mitotic spindle fibers attach to each chromosome's centromere.During anaphase, the sister chromatids are pulled apart by the spindle fibers. They move toward opposite poles of the cell as the spindle fibers shorten. Finally, in telophase, new nuclear envelopes form around each set of chromosomes. The chromosomes begin to decondense back into chromatin, returning to their more relaxed state. The mitotic spindle disappears as its job of separating the chromosomes is complete. The cell is now ready to undergo cytokinesis.
