Welcome to Part One of the Accounting Cycle: Recording and Adjusting Entries. The accounting cycle begins with recording daily transactions in journals. Each transaction is recorded with equal debits and credits, maintaining the accounting equation balance. These journal entries are then posted to the general ledger, organized by account. Each account tracks all related transactions in a T-account format. At the end of the accounting period, adjusting entries are made to update account balances.Common adjustments include recording depreciation, recognizing expenses, and updating prepaid items. There are five main types of adjusting entries that ensure accounts are up-to-date and accurate. With all transactions recorded and accounts adjusted, we're ready to move on to creating financial statements. After completing adjusting entries, we begin creating financial statements with the trial balance. The trial balance ensures our debits equal credits before proceeding with statement preparation.Next, we prepare the income statement to show our revenue and expenses for the period. The balance sheet presents our assets, liabilities, and equity at a specific point in time. Finally, the cash flow statement tracks all cash movements during the period. The closing process begins by transferring temporary account balances to permanent accounts.First, we close revenue accounts to the income summary account.Next, we close expense accounts to income summary. The income summary balance is then closed to retained earnings. Finally, we close the dividends account to retained earnings. After closing entries are complete, we prepare a post-closing trial balance to verify that only permanent accounts remain with correct balances. With all closing entries complete and the post-closing trial balance verified, the accounting cycle is now complete. The books are now ready for the next accounting period!
