Cellular respiration begins in the cytoplasm with glycolysis, a process that breaks down glucose. This process takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell.Glycolysis begins with an investment phase, requiring two ATP molecules to activate glucose. The glucose molecule is then split into two three-carbon compounds.During this process, electrons are transferred to NAD+ to form NADH.The process generates four ATP molecules, resulting in a net gain of two ATP, since we invested two ATP at the start. The process concludes with the formation of two pyruvate molecules, which will continue their journey into the mitochondria. These pyruvate molecules will now move to the mitochondria for the next stage of cellular respiration.Inside the mitochondrial matrix, pyruvate from glycolysis undergoes an important transformation.Pyruvate is converted to acetyl-CoA, releasing carbon dioxide and producing NADH in the process.Acetyl-CoA then enters the citric acid cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle, a series of chemical reactions that form a continuous loop.As the cycle progresses, it generates several important products. For each glucose molecule, the cycle turns twice.During these two turns, the cycle produces six NADH molecules and two FADH2 molecules, which carry energy-rich electrons. These electron carriers, NADH and FADH2, are crucial as they will transport their high-energy electrons to the next stage of cellular respiration. The electron transport chain is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane.NADH and FADH2 deliver high-energy electrons to the protein complexes. As electrons flow through the complexes, their energy is used to pump hydrogen ions into the intermembrane space. The accumulation of hydrogen ions creates a concentration gradient. These hydrogen ions flow back through ATP synthase, driving the production of ATP through chemiosmosis. This process of oxidative phosphorylation is highly efficient, producing up to thirty-four ATP molecules from a single glucose molecule. And with that, we complete the process of cellular respiration, nature's remarkable energy production system!
