Welcome to molecular structure and bonding! Today we'll explore how atoms connect to form molecules.Different elements are represented by different sized spheres with unique colors.Atoms can form different types of bonds. Let's look at single and double bonds.Water is a bent molecule with two hydrogen atoms bonded to oxygen at a one hundred and four point five degree angle.Methane has a tetrahedral structure, with four hydrogen atoms arranged around a central carbon atom.In this chemical reaction, two hydrogen molecules and one oxygen molecule combine to form two water molecules.First, the existing bonds in the hydrogen and oxygen molecules must break. The atoms then rearrange to form new bonds in the water molecules.New bonds form between the oxygen and hydrogen atoms, creating water molecules.Notice how the number of atoms is conserved throughout the reaction. We start and end with the same number of hydrogen and oxygen atoms. For a chemical reaction to occur, molecules must collide with enough energy and proper orientation. When molecules collide with sufficient energy, they can overcome the activation energy barrier. In an endothermic reaction, energy is absorbed from the surroundings, leading to a temperature decrease. In contrast, exothermic reactions release energy to the surroundings, causing a temperature increase. The reaction mechanism shows the step-by-step process of bond breaking and formation. Each step in the mechanism contributes to the overall energy change of the reaction.
