Our story begins in Hawaiiki, the ancestral homeland of the Māori people.Hawaiiki was a land of great spiritual significance, where our story's hero, Hape, lived among his people.Hape was a respected priest, known for his deep spiritual connection and wisdom, despite having a physical disability that affected his feet.His knowledge of karakia, sacred prayers, was profound, allowing him to communicate with the spiritual realm.The community initially planned to leave Hape behind when preparing for their great journey, due to his physical condition.However, Hape's spiritual powers and deep connection to the divine would soon prove far more significant than any physical limitation.And so began the remarkable story of Hape, whose spiritual journey would become a cornerstone of Māori tradition.At the shore, Hape began his powerful karakia, calling upon the spiritual forces of the ocean.His spiritual energy grew stronger as he chanted, his karakia reaching deep into the waters.From the depths arose Paneiraira, the great taniwha, answering Hape's call.Hape climbed onto Paneiraira's back, and together they began their miraculous journey across the vast ocean.While the Tainui waka was still far behind, Hape and Paneiraira moved swiftly through the waters.Through divine intervention, Hape's spiritual connection had enabled him to overcome his physical limitations.Guided by spiritual forces, Hape and Paneiraira approached the shores of Ihumātao.They arrived at Ihumātao well before the others, demonstrating the power of faith and spiritual connection in Māori tradition.As the Tainui waka approached the shores of Ihumātao...They were astonished to hear a familiar voice calling from the shore.Hape had already established himself at Ihumātao, creating the first settlement in the area.From this position on the shore, Hape became a founding ancestor of the region.His presence and legacy continue to be deeply significant for the local iwi.Two main iwi maintain strong connections to this land and Hape's story:These iwi continue to maintain their ancestral connections to Ihumātao, preserving Hape's story for future generations.The settlement at Ihumātao remains a testament to Hape's remarkable journey and legacy.
