The first shell can hold up to 2 electrons.The second shell can hold up to 8 electrons.And the third shell can hold up to 18 electrons.Electrons can jump between energy levels when they gain or lose energy.Rather than fixed paths, electrons exist in probability clouds, showing where they're most likely to be found.In a neutral atom, the number of protons equals the number of electrons, creating an electrical balance.This number of protons, called the atomic number, determines which element the atom is. Here we have carbon, with 6 protons.The arrangement of electrons in the outermost shell, known as the valence shell, determines how atoms interact with each other.When atoms come together, they can share electrons to form chemical bonds.Elements in the same column of the periodic table have similar chemical properties because they have the same number of electrons in their outer shell.Each of these elements has one electron in its outer shell, making them highly reactive and giving them similar chemical behavior.These elements are all soft, silvery metals that react vigorously with water and easily form positive ions.
